Volunteer Elephant Orphanage in Sri Lanka
Volunteers working in this program will work in an Elephant Orphanage in Sri Lanka where elephants are kept and treated for any ailments, feeding and taking good care of them. The orphanage has been operational from more than 30 years and houses around 70 elephants. Volunteers get a chance to see elephants up and close working in tandem with the local authorities. Volunteers help in Cleaning work in animal/ elephant enclosures, keep elephants environment clean ( Muck out living area ), Cleaning of the garden and assisting in landscape work, load orphanage’s garbage & debris, assistance in behavioral enrichment programs under supervision of the Mahouts you might be asked to help bathe the elephants in the river. Volunteers may also help vet doctors if needed.
A typical volunteer in this program would work for 4-5 hrs in a day and help the local staff in cleaning, bathing, and feeding of the elephants. All the activities will always be supervised and volunteers will have to take extra care of the Elephants as they sometimes tend to get aggressive.
Set in a picturesque small town not far from Colombo, this elephant orphanage is surrounded by hills and lush green forest, making work and volunteering experience like no other.

Program Requirements Volunteers must be 17 years or older at the beginning of the program. Volunteers need to have an open mind and flexible attitude for working in a new and different environment. The volunteer should be prepared to do some manual work in the Elephant Orphanage. Project Location The project placement is located in the Kaegalle District of Sri Lanka and is around 90 km from the capital city of Colombo. The area is surrounded by lush green forests and river.Volunteers can also visit ancient royal city of Kandy on the weekends .The city is located up north in the hills. |

Airport Receive/ Transfer: Volunteers are picked up from the Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo by the coordinator or representative. Those volunteers who will be already in Sri Lanka will be met by the staff at a designated meeting point decided beforehand. Orientation: All volunteers are provided with an orientation by the local coordinator covering topics such as Safety and Security, Transportation, About the Project, Places to Visit, Local Culture etc. Lodging: Accommodation is provided with a local Sri Lankan host family and is located within close proximity to the project. Volunteers are provided with their own separate room which is usually shared with other volunteers. Food: Volunteers are provided with three local meals in a day. Meals are served at the host family house and include rice, curry, vegetables, hoppers (local Sri Lankan dish) and fruits. Insurance: All participants are covered for full comprehensive Travel and Medical insurance for their time of stay in our project. You will be provided with the contact details of the local coordinator and staff who will be contactable 24 hrs once you are in country. Pre-departure information: After we receive full and final payment all participants are provided by a pre-departure information booklet by e-mail which will have all vital information about your program. The Pre Departure Information Booklet provides the complete details of the country, project locations, Visas, Immunizations, Things to Pack list, Accommodations, Contact Information etc. During your Free Time On the weekends you can travel up north to the hills of Kandy or Nuwara Eliya , famous for Sri Lankan tea. You can also visit the capital city of Colombo to experience the hustle and bustle of the city and do some shopping. |
