Volunteer Street Children in Ecuador

The street children project is founded, run and administrated by nuns as they have seen how children can suffer due to many problems in the environment, including their own family. Ambato that has many industries is sadly also famous for child labor and the centers aim is to give the children a place to be after school so they have a chance to do their homework and stay off the streets. They also give them something to eat for lunch to have the strength to study and to maybe learn some skills like making necklaces or earrings as this also helps the center to gain some income because the government doesn’t help too much or not at all.

The center is located in the central parts of Ambato and they have about 250 children and adolescents coming every day though the number can vary from day to day. They also have another part of the project in the suburbs with about 100 children and here they also try to produce handcraft whilst the children and adolescents can learn a trade to maybe start their own business one day

Volunteers are needed to help with the daily tasks in the centers such as keeping an eye on the children, play with the children, help with homework, help with reinforcement classes, help with the lunch for the children by for example cooking /serving food / feeding smaller children, make games, play games, dance, sing etc.
Exactly what they will do depends on a number of factors like if the children have homework or not, what the volunteer can and feel comfortable to do, the age of the children, what they need help with etc.

In general the staff in the projects needs the volunteers as they in many cases are too few to actually spend enough time helping the children but also its fun for the children to see another adult from another country that maybe have some new things to teach them or just to be with as many children lack of affection and social connection to adults.
